Construction kits seem to be all the rage these days, and why not when you consider pretty much everything’s laid on for you? Simply rip the whole CD track with all the parts on it, ReCycle it into your favourite sample and off you go...
And that’s what we’ve got here from Tekniks (the guys who brought us Rizing Drum’n’Bass and Underground Garage), a nicely produced collection of 30 kits, all conforming to the more commercial side of the scene, with what amounts to a fairly narrow selection of building percussion, moody basslines, wibbling tech stabs, pads, effects and keys to hang on to the breaks.
For those who don’t need to be completely spoon-fed and turned occasionally to prevent an outbreak of bed sores setting in, there’s a small selection of single drum hits for building up those loops from scratch, as well as a brief foray into multi-sampled basses. And completing the collection are around 40 breaks from LOL’s Rare Breakz Collection, which for me are the standout element of the CD.
That’s not to say the rest isn’t up to it, but don’t expect a huge variety of sounds to work with, apart from the occasional nod to the two-step arena it’s pretty much tech-fuelled action all the way, but a useful collection nevertheless.

With the Nu Skool Breakz scene going strong, we’re starting to see more than a trickle of sample CDs coming out in that area. This is one of the better ones.
Comprising 30 construction kits, complete with fully ‘constructed’ examples of what you can do with them. NSB’s main strengths are - as you might expect - in it’s beats and basslines. The drums veer between frantic, confident breaks and evil, brooding rollers; while the throbbing bass riffs are heavily processed and ruff as hell. Beyond that, there are also a fair few good FX parts to be found within each track, and these would be at home in many other styles of music too.
All in all, while NSB is squarely aimed at the Breakz stable, anyone into harder breakbeat or D&B influenced sounds would do well to give it a listen.
