Content: Hiphop is hot these days - well it has always been very popular, but now it's even more popular than ever. Zero-G feeds the sample hungry hiphop producers with a collection of very high quality construction kits and single samples. Grinding Beats has been made by some very highly respected hiphop producers who have worked with big names like Nas, Mary J Blige and Bilal and this collection does sound very good. As always the quality is great and the level of creativity in this collection of samples is very high. A Refill weighing in at 231 Mb sees the content also provided separately on the CD, outside of the refill. This makes it not only very attractive for Reason users but also for everybody else, which is a great thing!

Rx2 Files Construction Kits: You will find 17 construction kits which form very cool hiphop tracks and all of the individual elements for each track are provided. The construction kits are presented in various tempos and styles and are located in folders holding the different Rx2 files, which form the complete composition. This complete song is also available in the folder which enables you to hear the entire kit straight away. You will find the beat, bass and the other individual elements which form the full track and they all sound very current and really illustrate today's perception of hiphop. It's cool to experiment with these construction kits by mixing them, as they adapt very well to tempo changes. These are very nice, inspirational construction kits.

The Beats: The Beats folder holds 63 sub-folders containing beats. Each folder has one ore two main beats and a few variations which are usually the main beat without kick or snare. These beats are very, very useful when making hiphop tunes. They are especially useful because you get the beats also without kick or snare which makes it much easier to compose songs with them. Normally you can just leave out the slices representing the kick or snare but this often doesn't give the results wanted. Zero-G has solved this very well by adding these variations. The beats are in various tempos and range from simple beats to complex rhythms. Great material for any hiphop producer.

Music Loops: In the music loops folder you will find various loops. These include Fx bass, Fx keys, Fx Rhodes, Guitars and Bass and Organ loops. The bassloops are pretty good but I would have liked to have seen more of them. It's not really much compared to the amount of beat loops but what's there is really good. They are played with great style and have much feel to them. The keys loops are all Clavs and are very good. Many of them are distorted and effected just like the folder name describes. The Rhodes loops are funky and sound really warm. Again, there aren't many, but what's there is really good. The organ loops are probably played using a b3 and sound very good. Many of them use leslie and have a nice stereo effect to them. Tube distortion is also used a lot to give these loops a very nice distortion. It might not be a huge amount of music loops but what's there does complement the rest of the refill perfectly.

NN-19 Music Loops: The music loops are different from the Rx2 files and sound very good. You will find patches holding multiple loops which complement each other nicely. It's very inspiring to play these loops as if they were instruments, and, the only obvious restriction is that they have a fixed tempo, although if it is one that you already use, they are very useful.

NN-19 Patches: In this folder you will find patches which hold short single sounds which can be used to enhance your composition. You will find all sorts of sounds ranging from basses to effects, scratches, strings and more. Some sounds are tempo based and you will find the tempo highlighted in the name of the patch, for your convenience. The quality of these sounds is very high and fits right in with the quality of the entire collection. All in all, some really nice sounds to add to your hiphop tunes.

Redrum Kits: You will find 67 Redrum kits in Grinding Beats. The kits are all very usable and I had lots of fun going through them. You will find the kits which were used to create the beats in the Rx2 folder. This gives even more options when composing music using the beats. With these kits you can add your own variations to these beats.

Single Hits: 347 single hits can be found inside this folder. The drums are sorted in 4 sub categories - Bassdrums, Hihats, Percussion and Snares. You will find many high quality hiphop drums which are very inspirational. Again I had much fun going through them.

Conclusion: Grinding Beats is a sample cd packed to the rim with useful sounds and loops. It's not often that you find a collection with quality like this in a specific field. The sounds are all up to date and really live up to today's perception of hiphop. The only downside for me is that there could have been more bassloops but that's only because I really love what's there. The price for Grinding Beats is low in comparison to the quality and usefulness of this collection. Once again a very good collection coming from Zero-G!

The inlay name-checks The Neptunes and Timbaland - if you want to sell a sample CD, it makes sense to try and stylistically attach it to the hottest producers of the moment. The collection is subtitled Hip-Hop Construction Kits; you get 17 of these in the ReFill, which are made up of 107 REX files.

Predictably, it's the beats that take centre stage here - they're tightly programmed, and represent contemporary commercial hip-hop well. Indeed, you could easily step into the realms of pop by using them. There are music loops, too - basses, keyboards, guitars and organs. There's value in some of these, though a few of the effected ones feel over-processed, and you might have to work hard to make some of them work in your own compositions. The ReDrum kits are good, though - you'll find plenty of good source material for your programming activities.

Grinding Beats contains content outside of the ReFill: 300 REX files and 1200 WAV files. But it's going to be Reason users who are most attracted to this one - it will kick-start your hip-hop productions well, though you're going to have to find anouther app. to record your MCing...
