Author: Future Music Magazine, UK It is a known but rarely discussed fact amoung hi-tech music makers that you can never have enough loops. With hard drive costs crashing there is simply no excuse not to have Gb upon Gb of fantastic loops (95% of which you will never use but, what the heck, having them makes you feel good). And breaks are arguably the best to have as they can be layered into all sorts of styles from breakbeat through progressive house to drum'n'bass.
Beneath the Planet of the Breaks was an absolute gem and this collection contains some of it's finest moments from vibey sub-100bpm beats to more frantic funk.
There are 50 loops in total here, which may not seem that many but they are broken down into constituent layers, often with extra loops that offer a completely different vibe. One sample, entitled Boom Boom, for example, is made of one slightly 80s-sounding drum machine loop, which is then combined with a big beauty affair to produce an unusual hybrid.
Quality levels are maintained throughout and there is enough variation on here to appeal to various users. My only gripe is the number - less than 200 samples for a shade under £30 - but I guess the multi formats on the ProSamples series come into their own with this collection as, with anything from ACID to EXS24, you can speed up and mangle this lot to your heart's content.
Verdict: 8 out of 10
Author: Sound On Sound Magazine, UK "Cool, twisted and sickeningly infectious funk drumming. Stylistically, this covers a pretty impressive range of musical territories. The emphasis is always groove and feel, on creating something with feeling and character. The performances are spot-on, and it's refreshing to hear a drummer exploring the more experimental side of his craft - Shawn Lee employs strange electronic effects, vinyl scratches, vocal bits and bizarre signal-processing techniques as easily as other drummers would give you a tom roll. In short, this is a 21st-century sample CD that probably says more about the future of creative drumming than most other releases put together. FIVE STAR AWARD"
