Back in the 1970s, before there were any samplers - let alone sample CDs - the only access to sound effects open to the committed experimenter was a set of Vinyl LPs produced by the BBC, called (not unreasonably) Sound Effects. Apparently, Beeb engineers used to pride themselves on their ingenuity in producing sounds like ‘guillotined head’ (a cabbage being hacked in two) and ‘woman moaning’ (hey - this was the BBC). Needless to say, trying to cue up these effects on a record player and place them accurately in analogue tape was a skill in itself, but with such a wealth of material availble for the first time, no-one was complaining.

A latter-day equivalent of the BBC Sound Effects series has just been released by a company called Tekniks. With well under an hour’s worth of material, Virtuoso Sound FX is nothing like as comprehensive as the full BBC collection, but with its broad cross-section of sound effects on a single CD it should still have wide appeal. Actually, I say single CD, but this is actually a two-CD package; the second CD offers you all the sounds on CD1 in .WAV format.
