Hip Hop sample packs are one of the most popular product types on ProducerLoops.com. As we stock more Hip Hop sounds than any other site on the web, we thought we'd give you a bit of an introduction to the genre.

Hip Hop originated in in the late 1970s in the United States. A key element in the beginning was the isolation of the percussion breaks of popular Funk songs, sometimes using two turntables to extend the breaks (that’s where the term breakdancing comes from). Turntablist techniques, such as scratching, beat mixing, beatmatching, and beat juggling eventually developed to manipulate the breaks. Our 70s-influenced Hip Hop sound packs concentrate on those innovative breaks and percussive beats which gave rise to the early Hip Hop era. Many of our best Hip Hop sample packs are fully dedicated to vinyl scratches, giving you the sounds of influential artists like DJ Kool Herc, DJ Disco Wiz, and Grandmaster Flash.

The Sample Era

Hip Hop's early evolution occurred just as sampling technology and drum machines became widely available and affordable. Check out our massive selection of Hip Hop sample packs dedicated to drum loops by clicking the link.

Rap Vocals

Rap was manifested from the social conditions of the 1970s. This form of poetic and “verbal acrobatics” was derived from ancient African culture and oral tradition. This element removed the veil that isolated the wider culture from the social conditions of many under-served inner-city African American communities. The rapid-fire wordplay, spoke the truth of stories that weren’t being told and gave rise to a new urban narrative. Rappers may write, memorize, or improvise their lyrics and perform their works a capella or to a percussive beat. Jamaican toasting, a chanting vocal style, is also used over Hip Hop beats. Of course, we have a healthy collection of Hip Hop vocals and rap sample packs.

Development of Hip Hop

The 1980s marked the diversification of Hip Hop, as the genre developed more complex styles. Hip Hop has continued to develop into genres such as Crunk, Lo-Fi Hip Hop, Dirty South, Boom Bap and Trap, as well as the clear-cut differences of East and West Coast Hip Hop. So, as much as Hip Hop was influenced by other genres like Funk, Jazz and the Blues, it has led to the development of new styles from different parts of the US and beyond. Producers have endlessly experimented with Hip Hop sounds and using hardware, and then eventually software, to create innovative new beats.

Prior to the 1980s, Hip Hop music was largely confined within the United States. However, during the 1980s, it began to spread to music scenes in dozens of countries, many of which mixed the Hip Hop sound with local styles to create new subgenres. You can find the world's largest collection of experimental Hip Hop sample packs and Hip Hop sounds right here on Producer Loops.

1990s Hip Hop

Hip Hop sounds hit the mainstream during the 1990s, with artists like Tupac, WuTang Clan, Puff Daddy, Notorious BIG and Nas moving to the forefront of the genre. We’re proud to offer a selection of retro-themed 90s Hip Hop samples.

Modern Hip Hop

We have Hip Hop packs inspired by current artists such as Drake, Meek Mill, Young Thug, 21 Savage, Migos, Tory Lanez, and Bryson Tiller, as well as Hip Hop samples in the style of alternative artists like Quincy Joints, Herbie Hancock, Fun Loving Criminals, and Beastie Boys. Our most popular Hip Hop sample labels include Kryptic Samples and King Loops.

Plus, have a look at our Hip Hop packs by labels such as Touch Loops and Origin Sound, who are moving the genre into a new era influenced by the likes of Josh Pan, Krane, What So Not, Ekali and more. These avant-garde Hip Hop samples will help you create an intricate tapestry of incredible beats, with percussion that juxtaposes with beautifully detailed pads and melodic phrases. With mix-downs being crucial in the modern Hip Hop sound, the makers of these Hip Hop packs worked hard to get the balance between the fundamental elements like kicks, 808s and snares just right, so producers can concentrate on the creative side of making music. The perfect Hip Hop elements have been professionally created and are available within these sample packs.

808 Samples

We have hundreds of 808 sample packs, packs with staccato strings, flutes, 1990s style Hip Hop pianos, vintage electric pianos, and snares, as well as sound effects to help you create the quintessential sound of Hip Hop. All of the instruments commonly used in Hip Hop can be found in our popular Hip Hop sounds and samples section.

Hip Hop Construction Kits

Many of our Hip Hop Construction Kits are set up to create the perfect track for a rap vocal to be used over the top. For beatmakers who are looking for vocals to work with their melodies and percussive elements, there are also lots of Hip Hop packs solely or partially dedicated to providing Rap and Hip Hop vocals. Check out labels such as Loopmasters and Production Master for these. With lots of Hip Hop packs containing Construction Kits, beginners can learn the ropes whilst professionals can make use of loops and samples in a plethora of styles. Either use the song starters or get inspiration from the Hip Hop loops – fill your DAW with melodies, percussion, funk breaks or vocals, and experiment with ideas.

Other Genres

Hip Hop loops and samples are commonly used in other genres, including Trip Hop, Cinematic Hip Hop, Pop, and Future RnB. Of course, Hip Hop sounds will often work seamlessly with your existing collection of Trap sample packs too.
