It can be used as an umbrella term encompassing styles such as Techno, Trip Hop, Downtempo, and Ambient. In the UK especially it is associated with non-dance-oriented music, including relatively experimental styles of Downtempo Electronic Music. It can pretty much be used interchangeably with the term Intelligent Dance Music (IDM).
