Much of the instrumentation in Techno emphasizes the role of rhythm over other musical parameters, but the design of synthetic timbres, and the creative use of music production technology, in general, are important aspects of the overall aesthetic practice.
Minimal Techno took hold in Detroit in the early 90s due to Techno becoming too "ravey", with increasing tempos, and the emergence of Gabber. In response, Detroit DJs wanted to emphasise a single element of the Detroit aesthetic, interpreting Techno with "a basic stripped down, raw sound. Just drums, basslines and funky grooves and only what's essential to make people move."
Minimal Techno focuses on rhythm and repetition instead of melody and linear progression, much like classical minimalist music and the polyrhythmic African musical tradition that helped to inspire it. The average tempo of a Minimal Techno track is between 125 and 130 beats per minute.
