The Story of EDM Samples
The term "EDM" predates the genre itself, originally being used as a catch-all term for Electronic Dance Music, such as House, Trance, and Techno. Around 2011, EDM as we know it started to emerge, with artists like Martin Garrix, Avicii, and Swedish House Mafia pioneering a hard-edged style of dance music which was popular both on the radio and in festivals. In particular, the EDM sound captured the USA market, which previously had been hesitant to offer electronic music any kind of mainstream success.
In response to the explosion of EDM sounds in popular music, Producer Loops started stocking the best EDM samples, EDM loops and all-encompassing EDM Construction Kits.
Typical EDM Sounds
Producers have been creative with their use of EDM fills. Firstly, there's the impact snare sample, used as a fill every 8 or 16 bars. Many tracks also feature a short drum roll or rhythmic drum fill. We have hundreds of packs dedicated to offering the best EDM drum samples, precisely for creating a fill. Brass stab samples are frequently used as a fill element in EDM, as an alternative to a synth stab. Our EDM sample pack range includes hundreds of drop vocal sounds to take care of the fill before the drop, which is often one of the most memorable elements in a track.
Alongside the sub-bass, early EDM tracks used a tuned kick drum sample to fill out the low end, with the majority of bass action happening in the middle frequencies - that's why you'll hear a midrange bass in most EDM drops.
The EDM lead sound can take many forms and sounds have been borrowed from other genres like Electro, Dubstep and Trance. However, all EDM leads have one thing in common - they're massive and abrasive. Layering is key in the EDM sound, with many tracks having three or more sounds combined to deliver one main lead. The easiest way to layer several leads is to use our EDM MIDI loops, which can be loaded into your VSTi of choice. Different sounds can then be assigned to the High, Mid and Low layers of your lead. Make sure to EQ out the frequencies you're not using to make space for the other layers! For example, high pass the highest layer so that its lower frequencies don't conflict with your Mid and Low layers.
Use our EDM preset packs to get the quintessential lead sounds of the genre. We have thousands of EDM presets for Sylenth, Spire, NI Massive and Serum, alongside other commonly used virtual instruments.
Melbourne Bounce Samples
Melbourne Bounce sounds started appearing in our EDM samples category around 2012. Melbourne Bounce and EDM sounds can be interchanged thoughout a track but the main defining element of Melbourne Bounce is the lead. The "duck quack" lead to be precise. You'll find thousands of Melbourne Bounce samples when you browse our EDM loops category, or you can use our search function to look specifically for Melboune Bounce sounds.
Progressive House Samples
Progressive House started as a midway point between Progressive Trance and House music, made famous by artists like Dinka & Deadmau5. When EDM sounds began to dominate, Progressive House emerged into a club and festival genre, with huge drops, tuned kick drums and massive saw leads. For that reason we have hundreds of Progressive House sample packs in amongst our EDM sample packs. These packs are inspired by artists like David Gravell and W&W. Just type the name of an artist into our search bar and you'll find all our EDM sample packs inspired by them in your results.
If you're not swayed by our collection of the best EDM sample packs, you might like the original Progressive House, Deadmau5 style sound, which can be found in our Progressive samples section.
All in, Producer Loops offers thousands of EDM sound packs and EDM loops for you to instantly download. If you have a bit of production knowledge behind you, you'll find it easy to combine EDM loops with sounds from other genres, for example, Trance samples, to give your track a truly unique edge. If you're new to producing music, we suggest you try our EDM Construction Kits, which feature all of the samples used to create the pack's demo. Rebuild particular elements of the Construction Kit and add in some of your own creativity to get a track up and running quickly.
Of course, producers of every level can learn something from the project files of another producer, be it how to mix EDM, how to layer a lead sound or how to compress drum samples to make them cut through the mix. Browse our EDM Templates, which are available for Ableton Live, FL Studio, and more, to start learning from the professionals.
