Dancehall originated in Jamacia in the late 1970s. At first, it was a more sparse version of Reggae but as digitalisation occurred the genre changed considerably, notably the use of faster rhythms. It's an upbeat Afro-influenced sound and Dancehall samples are ideal for Club tracks and producers wanting to inject tracks with speedy rhythmic loops of bass, brass, vocals and sound effects.
In the 2000s, Dancehall experienced worldwide mainstream success used alongside a Poppier sound, and by the 2010s, it began to heavily influence the work of established Western artists and producers like Drake, Rihanna, and Major Lazer, which has helped to further bring the genre into the Western music mainstream.
