You know those geezers on telly who run...

by Future Music Magazine, UK

You know those geezers on telly who run around on stage banging old tin pots and suchlike? Well, that's what I thought this CD was all about when I read the list of what had been used to make the samples: road drills, stones, kitchen utensils and even teeth being brushed. Roger Turner's the DIY percussionist behind it, a Phil Collins-lookalike who seems to have filled up his garage with all sorts of old tat to produce some quite exceptional stuff - a music environmentalist if you like.

Twenty-three rolling atmospheres open the CD, not exactly easy listening but great as intros or backgrounds to anything from film scores to industrial nightmare moods. Next up you get Mr Turner running through a few grooves with his various tools - ear-splitting tin-can rattling stands sit side-by-side with wooden taps. They're all interesting texturally and many can be used as high-end percussive loops in a variety of musical styles. The last dozen or so tracks take you through some of the single ambient hits that Roger used on the CD, the more interesting of which include Brass Bells in Bowl and the un-nervingly titled Tray Bomb.

Junk Percussion is a weird one to try to give a score to and certainly won't appeal to the masses. However, if you're one of those people who wants odd sounds but doesn't want to spend hours huddled over a sampler, then you'll find plenty of sonic interest here. And if you are a sonic experimenter, don your white coat and put this in your player. Either that or get down the local tip sharpish.

In addition to the sounds themselves,...

by The Mix Magazine, UK

In addition to the sounds themselves, it's the atmospherics of the material which so impresses. Off the wall they might be, but the rightful place for a great many of these samples is most definitely in the mix. This is a sample CD you'll find yourself returning to again and again.
