The sound is darker and more experimental than Garage with less emphasis on vocals and incorporates elements of Breakbeat and Drum and Bass into 2-step. Tracks frequently use a minor key, rhythms are usually syncopated, and the tempo is nearly always in the range of 138–142 BPM. Other popular characteristics are the wobble bass or "wub", and the bass drop.
